Glory for Vincenzi as Caranti wins in Hungary
KDR driver Jorge Caranti made good on the work he started at Hockenheim by taking his second win in only his second race and maintaining a 100% win record with victory at Budapest, but it was Diogo Vincenzi who took the limelight by sealing his second WSRC Driver’s World championship.
All the Brazilian needed to do was to finish ahead of Castello, but by the end of qualifying it looked a difficult task as the Audi driver yet 1again was confined to the back row after apparently blocking the Raltwest driver during the free practice session. Caranti took pole with a spectacular lap, followed by Dave Carr-Smith, Castello, newcomer Nick van der Voort and Matt Finlay who was also demoted to the rear of the grid for passing under a yellow flag.
The Argentinian Caranti started from pole position and drove a near flawless race as he withstood a vigorous challenge from Carr-Smith.
Caranti made a good start from pole and fended off a spirited challenge from Carr-Smith into the first corner. Carr-Smith held him to a seven tenth gap in the opening stages as they two pulled away from the battling Audi of Diogo Vincenzi and Holden’s Matt Finlay, both having started from the back and charged their way past the Raltwest duo.
Finlay was able to pass Vincenzi on the opening lap, barging past the Audi into the top chicane as Vincenzi was forced to take evasive action which cost the Audi pilot a small amount of time.
Vincenzi then maintained a 1.5 second gap to Finlay and was obviously biding his time until the pitstops, although given the Audi’s apparent lack of pace, it came as a surprise to spectators to see the Audi pit first, rejoining behind the Raltwests of Bruno Castello and van der Voort. A slick pitstop by the Audi crew would see Vincenzi pass Finlay as the Australian made his stop one lap later.
Dave Carr-Smith pitted on the same lap as Finlay albeit a few seconds ahead and rejoined just ahead of Vincenzi, although he was unable to do anything about Caranti who pitted on the next lap and now seemingly had the race in the bag.
Meanwhile, both drivers of the Raltwest team were clearly not on the pace of the leaders in Hungary and Castello and van der Voort were reduced to mere players as the race unfolded with no pace to challenge the cars ahead, much to the disappointment of both who were expecting a good result. Van der Voort pitted on lap 5, from 6th position, Castello from 5th place.
Caranti took the win on lap 12 just under four seconds ahead of Carr-Smith. Seven seconds later, Vincenzi took third just beating off Finlay who was forced to settle for fourth. Bruno Castello came home 10 seconds behind Finlay for fifth and van der Voort crossed the line to take sixth and his first point in the series.
Congratulations to Diogo Vincenzi and the Audi Motorsports team for winning the 2006 WSRC Driver’s Championship!
