From my perspective.
During Practice if you have uber realistic race weekend like i do then do the long runs on 1 set of hard tyres...you will never set the fastest lap until maybe the end of your long stint when the fuel is nearly gone and the hard rubber has worn down.
for short sting use 1 set of softs but they will go off the boil quickly.
Save Setup.
For qualifying use the three other sets of softs for the run you have.
I have my qualifying set to a 40mins long and 9 laps max [inc. in and out laps therefore 3 hotlaps] therefore i use one set for each run and hope for the best.
For the race i opt back again to using hards as generally i never qualify too well and since i usually have a long first stint then hards are best..
Its depends mainly on the strategy which one is going to use in the race. For a track like Canada/Monaco e.t.c. i think using softs is suicide considering all the braking you do e.t.c. but for a track like Spa [where pitlane is short]/Suzuka/Indianpolis you can easily get away with using softs as long as you qualify well and can establish a decent lead/gap
there is a difference between the too.
Softs in GP4 seem immeadiately quick while hards are just a better option for the race. I think maybe you drove your laps cleaner or your deep into a stint?? so the hards where better.
Also brakes are an issue at Nurby a little so maybe the softs have just gone off the boil
