Vincenzi takes fourth in wet Monaco
Audi’s Diogo Vincenzi took his fourth consecutive victory this weekend adding up another 10 points to his 2006 account in great fashion. Although he was unable to set a faster time then pole sitter Matt Finlay during qualifying, the brazillian showed once more that Audi seems to have the edge on the other teams during the race as he pulled away from the other cars after the initial start scramble and secured a strong finish, 6 seconds ahead of Matt Finlay.
After putting an impressive qualifying lap, Matt Finlay showed that HSV seems to be back in the game as he settled for second place after putting pressure on the Audi of Diogo Vincenzi during the first 4 laps. Still, he was unable to match the pace from the Audi pilot and an early pitstop meant that he would never find himself in the leading position.
While the wet condition should probably have meant a slow start, the start ended up being pretty busy. Following the trend from his past GPs, Tom Matthews was able to jump from third to first as he dived into the first corner, but was later passed by both Audi's and Finlay as they entered the tunnel, dropping back to fourth. Matthews was then pressured by the RaltWest Honda of Bruno Castello for the entire second lap as they both entered a series of overtaking maneuvers in the rain doing a great display of driving.
As they crossed the finish line to enter the third lap however, Matthews was able to pull away from Castello and pass Matthew Green on the next lap as the Audi pilot went to the pitstops on the 4th lap. Matthews then drove a quiet race pitting on the 6th lap and finishing up in third at the end of the race.
Audi’s Matthew Green also drove a quiet race as he seemed to struggle a bit with balance during the race, but an early pitstop meant he was able to put in enough to finish up ahead of Bruno Castello to take fourth. Castello, who was able to climb as high as second at one point due to pitstops, ended up finishing in fifth after pitting on the 10th lap and not being able to get out ahead of Green.
Dave Carr-Smith of Vodafone Audi, seemed to have a hard time during the race and drove an anonymous race as he took the final point in 6th place. Flavio Santos of Raltwest was also stuggling and ended up being lapped by Vincenzi on the 10th lap.
With his latest win, Vincenzi is now with 47 points and 20 points ahead of Matt Finlay who was able to take up the second place in the drivers championship from Tom Matthews after his performance this weekend. Audi Motorsports also increased the lead in the constructors as the 1st and 4th finishes at Monaco meant another 13 points added to their total which is up to 58 points now. In second place sits HSV with 36 points and KDR was able to regain its third place from Raltwest.
The next race is now at the Nurburing circuit in Germany, in two weeks time.

fifth place... oh my god... If I haven't messed up my race setup... Hope that the things go in a different way @ Nurburgring... Both "Ralties" have a lot of things to work to get back into the battle...

Press Conference
Q: Welcome gentleman, to the Monaco GP press conference. Taking the 1st place for the fourth consecutive time this year is Audi MotorSports' Diogo Vincenzi. In second place we have HSV's Matt Finlay and in third KDR's Tom Matthews. Diogo, congratulations on your 4th win. A perfect race today?
Diogo Vincenzi: Thank you. Yeah, it was a perfect race for us. We were strong all week and even though Matt took the pole by a small margin, we were confident for the race. Once again, the car was perfect, well balanced and after the initial pressure from Matt I was able to pull away, so all went as planned.
Q: At the start you passed Matt Finlay, but you were both passed by Tom Matthews. Take us trough that opening lap.
DV: At the start, I was able to get a lead on Matt as we approached the first corner, but Tom was able to take the inside line and pass us. I just made sure to stay behind him and then when we dived into the tunnel I was already side by side with him. From there on it was just a matter of keeping Finlay behind me. It was easier after the 4th lap or so though as he seemed to drop back a bit.
Q: You and Matt were only a fraction of time apart during qualifying. Were you worried that they might have had the upper hand here?
DV: Not really. I could have probably made a better time, but the car was pretty hard to drive in the last sector and in the last corners specially, so I couldn’t make a better time. For the race though, it was important to take the lead on the first lap so that I could define the pace, but as it were, I was a bit faster at the start and then Matt dropped the pace a bit. Also, I was very consistent with my times as I lapped always inside the 1:24 range and that helped a lot.
Q: Matt, a great result today as you take 2nd place again. Still, not exactly what you expected after taking the pole?
Matt Finlay:
Q: During the first few laps you were able to put some good pressure on Vincenzi, but then you slowed down a bit. Was that just a decision on your part or was there some problem with the car?
MF:
Q: You have now taken the second place in the Driver’s table which must give you a good boost. Still, Vincenzi is 20 points ahead of you now. What do you think has to be done to start closing in on that gap?
MF:
Q: Tom, congratulations on another podium this year. After a great start, you had three cars passing you in the tunnel section. What exactly happened there?
Tom Matthews:
Q: After a great wet performance at Malaysia, you seemed to struggle a bit here at Monaco? What do you think was the main issue for you here?
TM:
Q: You are now 1 point behind Finlay. What is your prospects for the next GP?
TM:
Q: Diogo, back to you again. You now have a great margin of points to the second place. Everything going as planned so far?
DV: Yes, it definitely is. It's great to have a good margin, because the competition will only get hotter from now on. I think both HSV and KDR will be looking into trying a victory in the following GPs, and while Audi will keep working hard to mantain and increase the lead, we have a good margin to play with should something not go as planned. Hopefully, nothing bad will happen.
Q: The next GP is at the Nurburing, one of the test tracks of Audi. Do you think it’ll be easier, given the experience the team has there?
DV: You can never know. Surely, the fact that we test there means it'll be easier to make setups and such, but for instance, at Malaysia we were not able to keep up with the other teams even though we have great experience with that track. Still, it's Audi's home, and I'm sure we can deliver a great result again, specially as the car is now running perfectly for me.
Thank you gentleman, and congratulations again.

Press ConferenceQ: Tom, congratulations on another podium this year. After a great start, you had three cars passing you in the tunnel section. What exactly happened there? I don't actually know to be honest. I seemed to lose drive for a couple of seconds coming out of Lowes and just couldn't get as much power down onto the road. I was also struggling with understeer all weekend. You probably noticed it at Nouvelle in my qualifying lap. The car wasn't liking the wet at all this weekend Press ConferenceQ: After a great wet performance at Malaysia, you seemed to struggle a bit here at Monaco? What do you think was the main issue for you here? I wouldn't say I struggled. Monaco isn't a particularly easy track to get right lap after lap. The wheels lock easily, especially when coming out of the chicanes for the next corner, and the elevations really throw the car around. Today just, wasn't really my day, although I am still very happy with my performance in the wet compared to pre-season testing Press ConferenceQ: You are now 1 point behind Finlay. What is your prospects for the next GP? We tested at Nuburgring but never really fine-tuned the setup. It's low grip in many of the corners, and you can always feel as though you can push harder. Naturally when you do, you end up in the gravel ;D As for Finlay, he's a great driver, I would like to think that we're pretty evenly matched, but I think he could probably outclass me easily at most of the circuits given the chance. All I can do is my best, so that's what's gonna happen

well no to be honest, i was certainly hoping for a win here and i thought that we could seriously achieve such a result given the pace the car showed through qualifying. still, it is great to beat vincenzi and matthews to pole ;D no...no problem... well its simple. we have to beat him. we can take some positives away from today and i'm sure we'll close the gap soon. however, if he could oblige us with a couple of retirements, it would be much obliged ;D
