WSRC Season Review
While the teams are on a much needed break for the following three weeks, for some rest and development, we take a look on what has happened so far on the season and preview what’s coming next.
After four rounds, things are starting to fall into place a bit and we can see the tendency of each team and driver. After racking up two wins at Australia and Malaysia, Tom Matthews did not finish the last 2 races which cost him the first place in the championship since Audi’s Diogo Vincenzi won the Austrian and San Marino GPs. KDR is without a doubt going to work hard to arrive at Barcelona to try and fight for the win again.
Things are looking good for Audi now. With the two wins, a podium at Australia and a 4th place at Malaysia, Vincenzi is the leader of the championship with 27 points, 7 clear off of Matthews. Dominating the last two GPs, Vincenzi is showing that he is here to win, despite the turbulent start at Australia, and the rain troubled race at Malaysia. The two podiums from second driver Matthew Green also helped the team to establish itself in the top of the constructor’s championship, almost 10 points ahead of Holden Motorsports.
Speaking of Holden, they are also looking strong despite the two DNFs from Reece Byrne on the last two races. And even though Matt Finlay was seriously off-pace at San Marino, he capitalized on the retirements of the other drivers to get his 3rd podium of the year. Presumably they’ll also be testing hard during the next weeks to try and get the first victory in Barcelona.
RaltWest started slow this season, apparently still trying to adjust itself with the series, but are now looking strong as Bruno Castello was able to get a podium finish in their 4th race. Still, they were already showing speed on the other two races finishing very close to the front runners. But, second driver Flavio Santos is still struggling a bit as he tries to learn the car better and surely will be testing strongly to get improvements for the next race.
Lastly, we have Rhino Racing which is yet to close the gap a bit. Kyle Schroeder is a very good driver, but his full potential has not yet been shown, probably due to setup related problems, which will only be resolved as the team gains more experience.
The series has had two winners so far, but Audi is looking like the team to beat. The test sessions coming up will be interesting, as each team is looking into improving performance to try and get better results as we enter the European portion of the season. Stay tuned for more news on the test session, and we’ll be back for the Spanish GP at Circuit de Catalunya on the 23rd of April.
